Imagine yourself paddling through mangroves or over the crystal clear blue ocean. Suddenly you hear the water splash along your kayak! What was that? Was it a manatee? No, it is a bottle-nose dolphin!
One of the most impressive tours, for all age groups, is kayaking along the oceanfront of Belize or along its Cayes and rivers. The Belizean mangrove eco-region runs along the Caribbean Coast, beginning in Guatemala where it encompasses the mangrove habitat along the shores of the Bahía de Annatique, then proceeds north, along the entire coast of Belize, stopping before the border of Mexico.
The mangrove vegetation of this eco-region provides protection for the shoreline. It creates a barrier to erosion that is caused by tropical storms that enter the Caribbean Sea. The main types of mangrove vegetation are the red mangrove (Rhizopora mangle), the black mangrove (Avicennia germinans), the white mangrove (Laguncularia racemosa), and the associated mangrove buttonwood tree (Conocarpus erectus). A large population of West Indian manatees (Trichecus manatus) is found here. Many species of birds from North America migrate for the winter in this mangrove eco-region. Some of the Yucatan peninsula endemic avifauna ranges down into this eco-region as well as other faunal species, which utilize this habitat for its abundant resources, especially the availability of freshwater even during the dry season.
