Placencia Lagoon – an ecological gem!
Discover the secrets of the mangrove by kayak!
To really observe life in the wild, you must get close to it – and quietly. That’s why our kayak trips around the Placencia Lagoon are so popular – and so satisfying for the wildlife enthusiast.
Placencia Lagoon is a saltwater lagoon that lies between the Placencia peninsula and the mainland. This large lagoon teems with plankton, making it a rich feeding ground which supports a wide variety of fish, birds and mammals.
The most famous of these animals, is the West Indian Manatee. They love to feed on the huge weed beds in the lower part of the lagoon and drink freshwater from the streams that feed the lagoon. You have a good chance of spotting one of these large, endearing creatures.
Dolphins at play are a regular site and you may even get a rare glimpse of the endangered Morelet’s crocodile. Birdlife is abundant, pelicans, gulls, boobies and frigates being common sights, perfect for bird watching.
Our kayaks are comfortable, stable, and safe. Our professional guide will give you a buoyancy aid and all the instruction you will need to get out on the lagoon. After a few minutes, even if you are a beginner, you will be paddling like a pro, enjoying the easy glide through the water. Our guide is an expert on mangrove ecology, and will give you an informative and entertaining account of all the exciting things you will see on your trip.
We offer two trips a day into the lagoon. Our morning trip starts at 9am and finishes at 12 noon. All trips depart from and return to Maya Beach, which is an ideal spot for lunch or dinner after your adventure ends. Our afternoon trip is from 3 to 6pm, giving you the opportunity to enjoy sunset over the lagoon and watch the birds fly home to roost.
