Kayak through the realm of the monkeys. Monkey River
Get up close and personal with nature!

Travel with us down the beautiful Monkey River in remote Toledo province, and experience the fascinating wildlife of the river and jungle.  See the orchids, the iguanas, the turtles, the toucans, the parrots and of course, the magnificent howler monkeys.  And at night, camped by the river, you may even hear the throaty call of the jaguar.

Your adventure begins in Placencia at 9:00a.m.,where you will journey in air conditioned comfortdown the Southern Highway to the Bladen Branch of Monkey River.  Once there, we will transfer to individual kayaks; all safety equipment is provided, as well as water to keep you refreshed along the journey.

Paddling downstream is easy, and even if you have never been in a kayak before you will find it comfortable and stable.  Our knowledgeable Mayan guide will point out the animals and plants that we pass, and will explain how the plants have been used for food, medicine, tools and building material.   Our pace is leisurely, and there will be ample time to take photographs to preserve those wonderful memories. Monkey River

We pause for lunch on the riverbank; then carry on gently paddling down the river, stopping to camp before nightfall.  A delicious dinner will be prepared by your guide, and eaten by the campfire with the sounds of the jungle all around.  Now is the time to exchange stories and make friendships that may last for life!

Camp is prepared by the guides under canvas tents.  Sleeping cots are also spread for a nice comfortable night ahead.  All bedding is provided.

After a good night’s sleep we are up at dawn to experience the morning chorus as the jungle wakes up.  Breakfast, then back to the river where we carry on our journey down the lower reaches of Monkey River to Monkey River Village, a traditional Creole settlement which makes its living mainly from fishing.  Here we will have a delicious traditional Belizean lunch prepared by local ladies, and after lunch we will return by road to Placencia, driving through orange groves and banana plantations.  Approximate time of return is 2:00p.m.
