Tikal, Guatemala
(TIKAL OVERNIGHT)

The ancient city of Tikal is located to the north of Guatemala, in the center of Peten, or about 2 hours by road from San Ignacio, Cayo District, in Western Belize.  Tikal is the greatest site of the Maya Lowlands.  It holds an extensive area of 16 square kilometers, where more than 4,000 residential houses, palaces, temples, pyramids, ball courts and sweat houses were built.  Calculations are that in its grandest time, it hosted from 90,000 to 120,000 inhabitants.  Its first inhabitants founded a little village around 800 BC and built two groups of dwellings (Mundo Perdido and the another in the North Acropolis).  The most splendorous epoch, existed from 250-900 AD, when Tikal was governed by grand Sovereigns, who extended their territory and frontiers, conquered new towns, increased their relationships with settlements in the central Mexico, Chiapas, Yucatan, Belize and the highlands of Guatemala.

The heart of the site is comprised of various ceremonial, administrative and residential compounds, which are inter-connected by large avenues.  Some outstanding structures are the North, South and Central Acropolis, Great Plaza, Mundo Perdido, Siete Templos, Palacio de las Acanaladuras, Group P, Complex of the Twin Pyramids, East and West Plaza, and others which display private shrines and residential palaces. Various compounds have farming areas and “Chultunes,” which are big holes cut into the calcite bedrock to store grains.

Guests from Placencia can visit this magnificent lost city of the Mayas.  Exotic Belize Tours and its crew will take you on a memorable trip to this once powerful Maya City.  It is an overnight trip from Placencia with professional tour guides that will lead guests into the time of the Mayas.
